NO Marina for CLUMP POINT
URGENT: PLEASE WRITE TO THE MINISTER
The Hon Mr Anthony Lynham, Minister for State Development is only listening to those who want a marina at Clump Point.
He needs to hear from those who wish to see the exceptional natural values of Mission Beach protected against inappropriate development. Below is a considered position based on the information and outcomes of meetings to date being held to determine boating infrastructure development at Mission Beach. This is the last chance to have input to let the minister know you will only support development that is practical and sustainable within the constraints of Clump Point/Boat Bay environs. |
Copy and paste the text (below left) into the box (right) to send the Hon Mr Anthony Lynham a clear message from the Mission Beach community. (It has much more impact if you change or alter the message using your own words).

The development you are planning for Clump Point is unacceptable! Where are the studies to show this inappropriate development will benefit the Mission Beach economy? Why are you ignoring the environmental representatives on the Reference Group? Clump Point is a special natural place to the Mission Beach community. Clump Point has reached its full capacity providing support infrastructure for existing recreational boating use. The scale of development currently being proposed to cater for all commercial marine activities is not appropriate for this location. The only practical approach to an upgrade of marine facilities is to include the jetty to take pressure off Clump Point/Boat Bay. Expanding the intrusive artificial rock wall into the World Heritage Great Barrier Marine Park to provide for permanent berthing of boats (a marina) will create further demand, congestion, increase the potential for conflict situations and will forever compromise the exceptional aesthetic, cultural and natural values of the unique headland. I strongly support the following; - Part of the funds be allocated to finish the jetty so it can be used for current and future commercial boating needs i e buffer pylons and appropriate landings to make it at as functional as it was when it supported a thriving marine tourism industry. - Within the infrastructure upgrade, explore the possibility of a landing to cater for commercial tourist operators transferring passengers when the jetty is exposed to unfavorable weather conditions - No permanent berths at Clump Point. Focusing all the boating facilities at Clump Point will put unacceptable pressure on the high biodiversity values of the headland. Clump Point has already reached its full capacity to support recreational boating activities. The exposed bay of Clump Point is not an appropriate place for permanent berthing of boats i e marina. |

More details
I share a vision for Mission Beach of a thriving nature based tourism economy based on protection of the exceptional natural and cultural values of our two World Heritage Areas: i e low key and boutique in nature.
Clump Point is a unique and iconic headland able to be enjoyed by the whole Mission Beach community. Establishing marine facilities at this location has already resulted in destruction and ongoing impact of a fringing coral reef for a boat ramp, and recent destruction of critically endangered rainforest mapped as essential cassowary habitat, to provide extra recreational boating car parking as part of the State Development 'Safe Boating Infrastructure' project.
In the interest of retaining the natural character of Mission Beach, consistent with the above vision and the World Heritage convention, future development must strive for ‘no adverse impact’.
Re the Safe Boating Infrastructure Project being planned within both the recreational boating and scenic reserves at Clump Point
I support the following:
- the Perry Harvey Jetty to be included in the provision of safe boating infrastructure,
- fuel provision at the Perry Harvey Jetty only, not at Clump Point,
- a landing for safe loading and unloading of tourism passengers and goods for those times when afternoon northeasterly winds cause a chop at the jetty.
- The new regulated car park areas to include permeable surfaces and native shade trees appropriate to this high-value natural setting,
- a “Whole of Clump Point Management Plan” to protect the high environmental and cultural values and wilderness character of the headland,
- upgrade of boat ramp to three ramps with extra landing,
- If a rock wall is to be constructed: that the rock be transported by barge only, to avoid impact of heavy vehicle traffic on roads, community and through cassowary habitat.
I do not support:
- barge landing at Clump Point,
- permanent berths, introduction of floating pontoons (marina), future expansion for private development,
- expansion of the boat ramp development for a primary commercial boating hub.
I have serious concerns about:
-the purpose and footprint of a rock wall (proposed 120 (Min) - 200 metres) and its impacts on the natural values of Clump Point being a Habitat Protection Zone including its fringing coral reef, its unique geomorphological form and its beauty.
